Launching Wealthfront Cash
2019
Hard times
In 2019, the market was shaky. Our customers were scared and started moving their money to traditional banks. But those banks paid almost no interest. We needed to give our customers a safe place to park their cash without making them leave Wealthfront.
Startup mode
We had a choice to make: build a bank or find a faster way. True to our startup roots, we chose speed. Instead of becoming a bank, we partnered with others and built the Wealthfront Cash Account. This let us launch in months, not years.
The account
Our strategy allowed us to launch the first ultra-high-interest, $1M-FDIC-insured alternative to traditional checking or savings accounts. Free ATM access, fast transfers, and radical transparency. No fees. No risk. Just smarter money management. And because we weren’t a bank, we had to reinvent everything—including what we called the account, and how we explained interest, limits, and transfers.
My role
As content lead from inception, I contributed to product strategy, naming, legal reviews, signup flows, email systems, growth experiments, and help docs. I shaped the voice of the product and scaled content systems across surfaces. I also crossed into product design to help redesign the transactions page and streamline how customers moved money.
Impact
The Cash Account changed the company.
Growth: We moved $1B in the first 6 months.
Retention: Customers stopped leaving Wealthfront when the market dipped.
Scale: This became the foundation for Wealthfront’s "Self-Driving Money" vision.
We stopped being just a robo-advisor and became a full financial platform. This growth was the main reason we were able to IPO in 2025. On a personal level, it proved that good design and a growth instinct can move billions of dollars.
Highlights
Internal transfers
Moving money between accounts is technically hard and buried in legal rules. I redesigned the flow to make it feel instant and easy for the user, without breaking any banking laws.
Email design system
I read through all 200+ of our automated emails and realized they were a mess. I rewrote them all and built a simple system so our engineers could send beautiful, clear messages without starting from scratch every time.
Growth experiments
I led experiments to help users do more with their money. Many customers had extra cash sitting idle, so I built in-app guides to show them how much they could earn by investing it, while also disclosing the inherent risks.
Cash cat sweepstakes
I helped launch a campaign to get people excited about the cash account. My challenge was to make it feel like a game while following strict financial laws. I wrote playful, fast-paced copy that brought in thousands of new signups.
